DeKalb tackles snowfall
February 15, 1990
DeKalb and NIU were prepared for Wednesday’s snowstorm.
Mike Wilder, an NIU student majoring in meteorology and working at the Davis Hall weather service, said DeKalb might get about three to five inches of snow.
John Conlin, street superintendent of the DeKalb Public Works Street Division, said his department began salting the roads about 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, and began plowing at about 12:30 p.m. Plowing usually starts after about two inches of snow has accumulated, he said.
Wilder said if the storm moves as planned, temperatures should increase to about 40 degrees, causing the snow to turn to rain today.
If the storm moves farther south than expected, snow will continue to fall instead of turning to rain, he said.
Conlin said, most of the plowing done yesterday was done on main roads, and last night the public works division began plowing some side roads.
The Davis Hall weather service said the snow should turn to freezing rain Wednesday night, continuing today and turning to drizzle in the afternoon.
A DeKalb Police Department spokesperson said there have been six accidents since 1:30 p.m.
