Hinchee pulls down board record

The 1989-90 women’s basketball campaign is already a season to remember and with each game the Huskies are making it harder and harder to forget.

Another record was broken last Friday night as Tammy Hinchee darted into the NIU record books with a game-high 13 rebounds. With the bakers dozen, Hinchee became the all-time rebounding leader for women’s basketball at NIU (1,014). The previous record was held by 1985 graduate Lisa Starosta (1,003).

“I thought it was fitting that Tammy got the rebounding record because our rebounding carried us at key times,” Albright said. “The rebounding record is a real blue collar record and it’s as important as the scoring record.”

Hinchee added 19 points, but it was Lisa Foss with the hot hand that led the Huskies to a 112-91 win at Akron with 31 points. Dee Dee Jeske came off the bench and scored a career-high 17 points. Carol Owens and Kris Weis dished out double-figures with 20 and 11 points, respectively.

“I thought this was our best all-around play of the season,” Albright said. “We played great team ball.”

Two days later, the Huskies moved over to Cleveland State Universty and handed the Vikings their sixth conference loss, 88-66. Owens paced the Huskie attack with 28 points, 22 of them coming in the second half, and 10 boards. Denise Dove hit five three-pointers en route to a 17-point performance and Foss matched the point-guards’ total.

Hinchee rounded out another multi-player double-figure game as the senior scored 13 points and upped her rebounding lead to 1,019. Owens dominated the paint as she held CSU’s leading scorer Debra Taylor to just 10 points. The two wins moved the 23-ranked Huskies to 19-4 and a perfect 8-0 mark in the North Star Conference.

“We played well in the second half,” Albright said. “Carol Owens dominated the inside and Tracy Mondek gave us some quality time.”

The Vikings, a 7-14 team, played the Huskies tough. CSU had an early 22-19 lead and went into the lockerroom down by only 3 points, 38-35. That marked only the sixth time all season that the Huskies were held to 38 points or below in a half.

“The first half we were not in sync,” Albright said. “We got into out transition game in the second half. They’ve improved since the last time we played them (A 96-48 NIU win).”

With the weekend in the record books, the NIU team is looking to the Thursday matchup with the DePaul Blue Demons.

“It’s officially the time now to start thinking about DePaul,” Albright said. “Being in a big game and playing in front of a large crowd.”

DePaul escaped from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay this weekend. The Blue Demons edged UWGB 66-61 and need a win in DeKalb to keep their hopes alive for a conference championship and an NCAA berth.

“We feel like we have to win every game,” Albright said. “I think DePaul feels the same way.”
