SA to discuss ROTC policy, space usage

Student Association senators will discuss an ROTC policy restricting homosexuals from receiving scholarships and a recommendation for improving space at the Holmes Student Center.

The ROTC policy restricting homosexuals from receiving ROTC scholarships stems from U.S. military policies, but this is against NIU’s policy, SA President Huda Scheidelman said.

Scheidelman will present the policy in her report.

Senators also will address a recommendation of building an addition to the student center.

Boston consultants, who will send a formal recommendation some time next month, reviewed space usage on campus and decided the best way to solve the problem would be to add to the student center, Scheidelman said.

The addition would allow offices for the Career Planning and Placement Center, Student Counseling and Development, student organizations, University Programming and Activities and a commuter lounge area.

SA Senate Speaker John Fallon said an impeachment petition for Scheidelman will “most likely come up for discussion.”

Senator Galvin Kennedy and elected senator James Mertes submitted an impeachment petition on Feb. 2., but the senate cannot discuss the issue before Feb. 18.

The SA will meet at 6 p.m. Sunday in the student center’s Capitol room.
