Officials support bus use despite accidents

Huskie Line bus officials say students should not be hesitant to ride buses, despite three accidents in as many weeks.
The three accidents, which occurred Jan. 25, Feb. 6 and Feb. 9, only injured one person. NIU Student David Herda was hit by a bus Jan. 25 on Greenbrier Road while DeKalb was being showered by about eight inches of snow.
“We travel about a half a million miles on city streets every year,” said Charles Battista, Huskie Line director. “That’s like going to the moon and back. I’ve never seen a situation where ridership went down.”
This year’s accidents have been “very minor because of our extensive training program,” Battista said, adding “this year’s been nothing out of the ordinary.”
Dave Pack, Student Association mass transit adviser, said he does not think ridership will decrease. “It is not unsafe to ride a bus at all,” Pack said.
However, Pack said he does not remember three accidents happening in a three-week period.
The damage to the buses will be covered by the Huskie Line’s insurance carrier, Pack said. He said there will be no increase in student fees to cover the repairs.
Most students said they will continue to use the buses. “I think it was just a coincidence,” said Maria Reuter, a junior English major. Reuter said she is not concerned because she does not ride the buses very often.
