Doubleheader features IIT, Illinois-Chicago in water

There will be a double feature at Anderson Swimming Pool tonight starring NIU record holder Jenny Wendell.
Wendell, who last weekend broke her old 400-yard Individual Medley record by over a full second, will lead the women’s team into tonight’s 7 p.m. meet meet against Illinois-Chicago. The women will be looking to improve their 4-4 record against a improved Flames swimming squad.
Women’s coach Mike Burt said, “(UIC) is much improved over the last two years and as far as quality goes they’re about our equal, but they’re not as strong in depth. But they do have one diver and we don’t have any so we’re going to have to overcome that.”
Wendell broke her old 400 IM in last weekend’s Illini Classic where the Huskies finished fourth out of four teams. Wendell’s record time was 2:09.97 which was 1.12 seconds faster than her old record which was set last season.
Wendell also finished first in the 200 IM and third in the 200-yard breaststroke.
“Any time you have a record setting person it’s pretty exciting. (Wendell) has been swimming super all year and she’s well ahead of her pace last year. With god willing, the flu will stay away and she’ll break a few more records,” said Burt.
The women’s meet will follow the 4 p.m. men’s meet. The men will take their 7-1 record against a once formidable NAIA power Illinois Institute of Technology. But now they’re just “one hell of an engineering school” according to men’s coach Dave Clark.
“I think they finished fourth or fifth in the NAIA a couple years ago but they don’t have the same personel now,” said Clark.
On Saturday the men will travel to Evanston to take on Northwestern in a 2 p.m. meeting. A meet Clark expects to be as exciting as the Notre Dame meet a couple weeks ago when the Huskies lost 148.5 to 151.5.
