Faculty members ‘break’ in DeKalb

By Mark Gates

Don’t expect to see an NIU faculty member sleeping in the aisle of a bus heading for Florida or letting loose on the beach this spring break.

Many are staying right here, in DeKalb, miles from the nearest tanline contest. Most professors said they use spring break to do research and pursue other interests not far removed from the classroom.

Art professor R.B. Adams said she’ll be busy in her studio this spring break, producing pieces of fiber and mixed media art. “We talked about taking a trip, but we’re not going,” Adams lamented.

Geography professor Richard Dahlberg will work on campus doing research and writing articles. Physics professor Arthur Fedro said he usually goes to conferences during break.

University Libraries Instructor Larry Palmquist said he’ll also stay on campus during break. He said he’ll be working in the library to get things organized and installed. However, a week before spring break he plans to go to a conference.

Some professors will venture out of DeKalb, but not to beer-guzzling competitions.

Music professor Jan Bach said he’ll either take a trip or work on a concerto he’s writing. Since his family has different vacation schedules, he said he will probably go alone if he goes anywhere.

Associate geology professor Clarence Casella said he will spend most of his vacation in New York seeing his mother.

Nancy Mack, an associate mathmatical science professor, said she spent her last spring break visiting friends in Madison, but this year she’ll probably take three days off and spend the rest of her vacation working on research.
