Two live for price of one

Two NIU students can live as inexpensively as one at University Apartments, 501 Annie Glidden Road, if they are married or have children.
The apartments for married students, married students with children and single parents with children are referred to as “Family Housing,” said John Fowler, associate director of student housing.
Family Housing offers a total of 80 university-run apartments, 40 of which have one bedroom and the other half are efficiencies, similar to studios, Fowler said.
Students living in the housing pay monthly rents to the university and costs depend on the kind of apartment they live in, he said.
Not many students are turned down at Family Housing, although there is a waiting list. “We always have demand—especially for fall,” Fowler said.
Saurjya Khandai, a graduate student getting his masters degree in industrial engineering, lives in a one-bedroom apartment with his wife and child.
“The housing is pretty small,” Khandai said. “But the price is good.”
Kim Brahmama is also a graduate student working on his masters degree. He has been living in Family Housing since fall 1988.
“I like it here very much because the rent is cheap and it’s close to campus,” Brahmama said.
He said there is “plenty of space” for him and his wife and said he likes his neighbors, many of whom are from his native country of Indonesia.
Efficiencies cost $200 per month while one bedroom apartments are $220 per month. Leases begin in August and last a year.
The rent includes all utilities except phone and cable, said Deborah Hooker, account technician for student housing services. The apartments come furnished with a dining set, bed, table and blinds.
