More than 75 agencies will be recruiting and handing out information today at the Holmes Student Center for Nursing Careers Day.

The event is geared toward undergraduates looking for internships and graduates looking for jobs, but the public is welcome, said Christina Fauser, chairwoman of NIU’s Student Nurses Organization Career Day Committee.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Duke Ellington Ballroom.

Lisa Joss, a senior NIU nursing student, said although she has a job after graduation, she will go to the event to look for competitive opportunities.

“It can be very helpful to see what the hospitals have to offer in terms of salary and benefits. A lot of students don’t know about the the hospitals in the area,” Joss said.

Students can bring resumes for internships and jobs that might be available, said Jill Jagielski, president of the student organization.

“We have health facilities from small hospitals like Sandwich Community College to the big ones like Loyola attending,” Fauser said.

Jagielski said a variety of health disciplines including intensive care, long term health care and rehabilitation clinics will be represented. Representatives from hospitals, public health departments and the military also will attend.

Kishwaukee Community Hospital will send six representatives to NIU, said KCH Nursing Supervisor Sheri Mathesius.

“There is a nursing shortage, so these recruiting opportunities can help us a lot,” Mathesius said. Many NIU students and alumni work for Kishwaukee, so recruiting at colleges like NIU has worked, she said.

Most of the recruiters will be publicity officers who are registered nurses as well, Fauser said.

“A lot of people have attended it in the past. It’s a pretty popular event,” Jagielski said.

“Novelty items will be given out. People usually leave with a big bag of things,” Fauser said.
