Wrestlers cruise to third victory
January 19, 1990
Despite some shifting around in its lineup, the Huskie wrestling squad took seven of the 10 matches from the visiting Marquette Warriors and won its third meet of the year 28-17.
“I think this is indicative of how far we have come,” coach Ed Vatch said. “This shows how deceptive our record really is.”
Gene Marino upped his record to 10-9 with a 5-3 win over Ross Bruno in the 118-pound match.
“Geno is our sparkplug, he’s our first guy on the mat,” Vatch said. “That first guy is the most important one for us.”
Marquette’s Mike Pasdo (126) topped the 30-win mark with a second-period pin of John Willems. At 134 pounds, Scott Frego received a forfeit to put the Huskies back on top 9-6.
A 15-0 technical fall by Pete Andreotti (MU) over Jeff Chumbley at 142 pounds returned the lead to the Warriors 11-9. Jim Herdman, who beat out T.C. Dantzler for the 150-pound spot, won his first match of the year against five losses with a 5-1 decision over Eric McMenemy.
Starting with the 158-pound slot, the Huskies were moved up one weight class to accommodate the absence of 190-pounder Bill Jepsen. T.C. Dantzler won a 9-2 decision over Jerry Garrettson (MU) at 158 pounds to give NIU a 15-11 lead. Jim Kossakowski (167) was stuck with only :04 seconds remaining in the first period by Brian Chambers to put the Warriors back up 17-15.
At 177 pounds, NIU’s Jon Popp won a 5-1 penalty-filled match to put the Huskies up for good, 18-17. Joe Madonia easily beat John Cotant (MU) 18-8 in the 190-pound slot and Mark Kuehl received a forfeit in the heavyweight division.
