Two arrested in knifing incident

The University Police arrested two NIU students in relation to a knifing incident Sunday morning in Douglas Hall.

Peter S. Scordato, 20, 111 Douglas Hall was arrested by the University Police and charged with aggravated assault and the unlawful use of a weapon. Michael S. Lata, 18, 107 Douglas Hall was arrested by the UPs and charged with aggravated battery.

Scordato and Lata allegedly were attempting to enter the first floor in the A-wing of Douglas Hall when two males approached them to enter the floor, said UP Lt. Ron Williams.

An argument began between the four students as the second pair of students attempted to enter the floor and the four males began “pushing and shoving,” Williams said.

Scordato allegedly then drew a knife against one of the other males during the argument and struck him in the forehead causing a three inch by one inch cut. Lata allegedly struck the other male student with a drinking mug but did not cause any damage, Williams said.

The injured male was then taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital, Rt. 23 and Bethany Road, and later released.

Scordato and Lata were later identified by the two victims in their rooms and arrested, Williams said. Several martial arts weapons, such as a sheathed three-inch knife and thumb cuffs were taken as evidence.
