December 7, 1989
Changes in Eastern Europe and other global issues will be addressed by four speakers at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Holmes Student Center, Room 305.
The presentation, sponsored by Freedom Now, is titled “The Peoples’ struggle in Eastern Europe; what does it mean, what lies ahead?” Each speaker will focus on a different topic of concern in separate countries in the Eastern bloc and changes occurring there.
“The peaceful revolution, that’s what it’s all about,” said Heinz Osterle, an NIU professor of foreign languages and literature talking Thursday about the changes in East Germany.
Osterle said his speech is titled “The Cold War and a Peaceful Revolution? The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) as an Example.” A discussion of the different scenarios for the future of East Germany will be one focus of Osterle’s presentation.
Vlasta Giese, a DeKalb resident from Czechoslovakia will speak on recent Czechoslovakian governmental changes, history of their politics and how changes evolved. Giese, a former political refugee, immigrated from Czechoslovakia in the 60s and is now an American citizen.
Discussing the trade union movement recently winning over the communist government in Poland will be Jerzy Ciechanski, an NIU student working on a political science doctorate.
Peter Wermuth, writer for News and Letters, will be speaking on “East and West relations with a global point of view.”
Osterle said he looks forward to informing the audience because the people of Freedom Now are encouraging people to think more globally.
