Regents hope to restore ties
December 8, 1989
SPRINGFIELD_ The Board of Regents hope to restore good relationships with the campuses and their communities with the election of its officers, according to the new board chairman.
The board elected Brewster Parker as chairman and Clara Fitzpatrick as vice-chairwoman of the board.
Parker said he hopes to close the rift which has developed during this semester’s controversy over policy changes within the Regents system.
The Regents govern NIU, Illinois State University at Normal and Sangamon State University at Springfield.
Former board Chairwoman Carol Burns, who held consecutive two-year terms, said she chose not to seek re-election for “personal and professional reasons.” Burns said, “I think we all agree that after four years, it is time for a change.”
Parker emphasized the need to establish the best possible relationship between the campuses and the board and the need to regain the confidence of the campuses’ local communities.
SSU Student Regent Brian Hopkins said, “Brewster’s election is the smartest move I’ve seen the board make.
“I think Brewster will create a new image for the board,” Hopkins said, adding Parker will make the board “more accessible.
“There was no reason for a show-down. The sentiments of Burns and the rest of the board were that it is time to make a change,” Hopkins said.
NIU Student Regent Bob Tisch agreed Parker has “a different approach” and will bring “increased openness” to the board.
Chancellor Roderick Groves said he feels the board has chosen a strong leadership team.
“Brewster Parker, Clara Fitzpatrick, and I have had a long association in this system. We have worked effectively together to achieve many mutual purposes and goals. The prospect of continuing that association with them as leaders of the board is one that I look forward to,” Groves said.
