The first food drive sponsored by the Golden Key National Honor Society will be today in front of the Pow-Wow.
The Golden Key will collect food from anyone who will bring the food to the Pow-Wow between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The organization will accept any food that is non parishable, or in cans, said Colleen O’Meara, a member of the Golden Key Honor Society.
The Golden Key will give the food to the DeKalb Food Pantry, which will distribute the food at St. Mary’s Church at the corner of Third and Fifth Streets in DeKalb. Students also can drop food off at the Newmen Catholic Student Center. The food will be given to anyone who is in need.
The DeKalb Food Pantry gives food to those in need every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon. This will be a on-going event lasting for the next three years.
Fabian DeRozario, Golden Key Chapter leader, said the turnout for the food drive has been satisfactory. He said he wants students to realize that “If everyone gives a little, then there will be a lot to give.”
The Golden Key also has been involved in other events. DeRozario said last year members went to the DeKalb Nursing Home to sing Christmas carols, and this year they will sponsor a study day called “Study ‘till you drop day,” on Dec. 9 from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. He said the Golden Key is involved with the food drive to contribute their little bit to help.
