Sexual assault reported

A “little sister” who was sexually assaulted at a party with Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity members filed a complaint Thursday with NIU against the person who allegedly attacked her.

NIU Judicial Office Director Larry Bolles said Thursday he began investigating the assault that took place at the Lambda Chi house, 917 Greenbrier Road, about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 2.

Jon Dalton, vice president for student affairs, said the victim contacted the Sexual Assault Response Team and was treated at the University Health Service one day after the assault.

But the complaint was not filed with the judicial office until Thursday. Dalton said, “There was some communication breakdown. Normally the judicial office would have gotten involved sooner.”

He said the procedure going through SART involves a number of offices being informed of an incident.

Lambda Chi President Mike Johnson said as a result of the incident, chapter officers suspended a fraternity member from activites. He also said the member, who lived in the house, was removed from the house.

Johnson said the fraternity will not have a little sister program after this semester.

Dalton said that according to the complaint made, alcohol was served at the party. “If alcohol was served to minors and a sexual assault occurred, the strongest sanctions will be brought to the individual and the house.”

Dalton said he is concerned about “the action taken against the accused and the responsibility of the chapter,” regarding the serving of alcohol to minors.

Jeff Cufaude, activities adviser for University Programming and Activities, said, “We always hold organizations accountable for their members’ actions. This was a fraternity event.”
