October 20, 1989
A strong-armed robbery involving drugs at an NIU residence hall was foiled when University Police found and arrested two of the five thieves.
University Police are searching for the remaining three robbers, described as being black and college-age. The Douglas Hall break-in occurred between 1:15 a.m. and 1:30 a.m.
Alex T. Yates, 19, 398 Douglas Hall, was arrested by the UPs and charged with two counts of strong-armed robbery, said UP Lt. Ron Williams.
NIU student Anthony Rogers, 23, 900 Crane Drive Apt. 707, was arrested and charged with strong-armed robbery after the two allegedly were accompanied by three additional people and forced their way into David W. Bergeneorf’s residence hall room, 183 Douglas Hall, Williams said.
The five students allegedly took a “small amount” of cannabis in a bag after grabbing one of the room’s residents, pushing him around, breaking a mug and rummaging through personal belongings after demanding keys from the resident, Williams said.
Bergeneorf, 18, was arrested by the UPs for the possession of cannabis, Williams said.
Yates was positively identified as one of the individuals who had forced themselves into the residence hall room. The identities of the remaining three students are unknown and UPs are continuing their investigation, Williams said.
