Senators aren’t threatened
October 26, 1989
Although many Student Association senators feel it is a “power grab,” the Internal Affairs Committee’s proposal that will change the SA bylaws would only improve the quality of resolutions submitted.
If passed, the IAC’s proposal will allow them to accept or reject resolutions to be brought before the senate. The resolution review will confirm facts, improve wording, clarify the purpose and correct grammar and spelling.
Even if a the committee “terminates,” which is perhaps a poor word for rejects, a resolution it can be brought back for consideration of the senate with a majority vote. It will also have provisions for emergency resolutions that need to be presented to the senate at the next possible meeting.
This move by the IAC shows good initiative to improve the reputation of the senate. As SA Sen. Rob McCormack said, the motion to change the SA bylaws is “crucial for the SA to improve its efficiency, professionalism and credibility.”
Some senators feel threatened by a small group of people gaining control over the senate, but that does not appear to be the case with the IAC. The IAC comprises 10 senators and is chaired by the SA vice president, not hardly a group out of touch with senate concerns.
The SA is in definite need of improvement and the IAC proposal will help the situation. Of course senators should still have a say in resolutions, and with the proposed changes they will. If they feel the committee made a poor decision in “terminating” a resolution, a majority can vote it back for consideration.
