SA passes resolution
October 17, 1989
The Student Association passed a resolution Sunday night congratulating newly-appointed 7th Ward Alderman Jeff Monroe, but left off a friendly amendment condemning remarks made by DeKalb Mayor Greg Sparrow and 4th Ward Alderman Rita Tewksbury.
SA President Huda Scheidelman said the SA is willing to work with NIU student Monroe, although rumors indicating the SA does not represent the student body are “untrue.”
Scheidelman said remarks made to her by Tewksbury and 3rd Ward Alderman William Hanna about Monroe faking his resume were uncalled for. “They tried to make it appear like I was creating a situation—creating an accusation.”
“Let’s put it all behind us,” SA Vice President Steve Coloia said. Coloia said there were conflicts with the spirit of the resolution while the amendment was not a legitimate subject matter.
After some debate, the amendment was withdrawn and the resolution passed alone.
A resolution stating the SA is “not in opposition” to the Board of Regents’ proposed policy changes, that have been deemed by some members of the three regency university schools as a “power grab,” was also passed. The resolution, drafted by NIU Student Regent Bob Tisch, will be presented to the board this week at NIU.
The Regents govern NIU, Illinois State University at Normal and Sangamon State University at Springfield.
In other business, former Senate Speaker Phill Buoscio failed in his second SA Supreme Court self-appointment attempt. Buoscio said he appointed himself and former SA Vice President Cam Davis because both have previous SA experience. Under the SA Constitution, Buoscio can appoint two people to the court because he lost the presidential election to Scheidelman last spring.
Although not required, Buoscio said he tried to advertise for the position through the SA public relations office. However, Public Relations Adviser Chris Hudders was unavailable to help him. “I didn’t want to deal with someone I felt inadequate,” Buoscio said.
Buoscio refused to reveal the other people who applied for the posts.
At the request of Sen. Todd Allen, the SA also held a moment of silence for late NIU Student Jason Firkus, who died last week of Muscular Dystrophy.
