Star to celebrate 25th anniversary as a daily
September 28, 1989
The 1989-90 school year marks the 25th anniversary of The Northern Star as a daily newspaper, and the Star is planning a year of publicity, promotions and public relations to commemorate the last quarter century.
The theme of our anniversary, “The First Amendment: Freedom of the Press,” is the basis of our sponsored events throughout the school year. Events will include seminars, speeches, a forum on First Amendment rights and special presentations at a reception and banquet.
The Northern Star has changed and grown along with NIU, and many of these changes will be presented in a weekly column each Thursday in the Star. This column, entitled “25 Years Ago at NIU,” can be found on page five, and it will contain items from selected Star issues of 25 years ago. The column also will feature a photograph originally printed in the Star 25 years ago.
The Northern Star hopes to rekindle alumni interest in the newspaper and the varied facets of the NIU community. We also hope to spark student, faculty, administrative and community interest in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and freedom of the press.
The Star staff wants to continue to bring to the NIU community a quality newspaper. We hope you enjoy a short trip back to yesteryear through our “25 Years Ago” coverage.
