Brigham to lead 7 into NIU Hall

Former Men’s Athletic Director Robert Brigham heads a list of seven to be inducted into the NIU Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 6.

Brigham, who now serves as special assistant to the president for intercollegiate athletics, lettered in football three times from 1947-49 and lettered in wrestling once. Brigham gained fame as a blocking back on the Huskie grid team, but his 242 yards rushing against Washburn in 1948 still stand as a school record. He later served as NIU wrestling coach before being named athletic director in 1968.

The following six athletes also will be inducted:

Tim Dillon was a two-time Honorable Mention All-America forward for the NIU basketball team (1982-83, 1983-84). He ranks third on the school’s all-time scoring list (1,559 points).

Dawnita Doty (Teague) became the school’s first woman to qualify for post-season competition by earning an All-Around berth at the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Midwest Championships (1980-81).

Alan Eck was half of the prolific (Tom) Beck-to-Heck passing combination under Hall of Fame coach Howard Fletcher. He led all NCAA College Division receivers with 11 touchdown receptions in 1959.

Doug Kieso was the NCAA Division I pommel horse champion, recording the top score ever (9.95) in the individual finals (1983). He also beat 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Peter Vidmar of UCLA in the 1983 NCAA Championships.

Al Kranz, a charter member of the Illinois Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame, was NIU’s first Certified Athletic Trainer. In addition, he was a co-founder of the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association.

Jennifer Van Alstyne swam her way into the NIU record books as a four-time All-Mid-American Conference swimmer (1981-84). She also qualified twice for the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women National Championships (1981, 1982).
