College of Business sponsors career day

Junior business majors interested in planning their careers will get a peek into the future business world from NIU alumni at the annual College of Business Career Day.

The Career Day is sponsored by the College of Business Career Advisory Board and will be held on Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center.

Bonnie Ward, coordinator of Career Day, said principal business classes will be canceled for the day since students are required to attend the event.

All speakers at the event are alumni of NIU and will be addressing students at four different sessions scheduled throughout the day. Students can sign-up for these sessions on Sept. 13, 14, and 15 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the Wirtz Light Court, located in Wirtz Hall.

Because of their popularity, the two optional career development sessions, which were introduced at last year’s Career Day, will be kept on the agenda, Ward said. Topics will include information on internships, graduate work, clubs and committees and advice on career planning and placement.

Gary Scott, director of Career Planning and Placement, will present information at the second session on the services provided by CP&A.

Four panelists from major Chicago firms will discuss trends in their respective industries, Ward said. Following the panelists’ presentations will be a question and answer session.

James Lentz, a general partner with The Country’s Best Yogurt (TCBY) and a full-time business teacher at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Ill., is one of the panelists scheduled to speak at Career Day. Lentz graduated from NIU in 1969 with a B.S. in accounting and went on to receive his M.B.A. in 1971. The panel also includes Scott Higgins from Motorola, Inc. Higgins graduated from NIU in 1977 with a B.S. in Operations Management.
