Repairs close pool
September 18, 1989
A scuba class was closed and others transferred from the Anderson Hall Pool Natorium after a delay in renovation materials forced the pool to close until mid-October.
Nancy Hungate, aquatics coordinator for physical education, said classes that used the pool were transferred to the Gabel Hall Pool. The pool can handle the double capacity of classes for about a month. After that, if renovations on the Anderson Hall Pool are not finished, additional classes might have to be closed, she said.
The $55,000 renovation includes the removal of the existing lighting fixtures, a consultation fee, the installation of specialized lighting fixtures that can withstand humidity, and painting the pool and ceiling.
Conrad Miller, administrator and support service project manager to the Physical Plant, said the installation of the fixtures presents a “logistical problem” because of the wide span of the pool.
Scaffolding is being rented and erected inside and around the perimeter of the pool to paint the ceiling and install the lights. Part of the light fixture system has already been installed along the perimeter of the pool, and a gridwork support system for the rest of the lighting is being installed.
The renovations are being paid through special project funding by state.
The lighting fixtures cost $13,750 and will take up to six to eight weeks for delivery. Englewood Electric out of Rockford, put in the lowest bid.
Buchanan and Bellows and Associates from Bloomington, Ill., was hired as a consultant to determine what type of lighting fixtures would be needed.
