DeKalb council to fill 7th Ward vacancy

By Mark McGowan

DeKalb Mayor Greg Sparrow is accepting resumes for the position of 7th Ward alderman, a job vacated Aug. 10 by Mark J. Powell.

Sparrow is in the process of selecting candidates for the position, which can be held by a student, to present to the DeKalb City Council Oct. 9 for ratification. Sparrow will review all resumes sent in and choose the best three.

“Anyone living in the ward might want to apply for the job,” Sparrow said. The deadline for applying is Sept. 22 at 5 p.m.

The 7th Ward includes Grant and Stevenson Towers, Douglas Hall, High Meadows, DeKalb Plaza and University Heights. Its boundaries include Annie Glidden Road on the east side, but also Douglas Street and Stadium Drive, the Chicago and Northwestern Railway on the south, Varsity Boulevard on the north and about two blocks west of Stadium Drive on the west.

Applicants for the position must have been a resident of the city at least one year before appointment, be a registered voter and have been a resident of the ward at least 30 days prior to appointment.

The 7th Ward has been without an alderman since Powell left the position, Sparrow said.

The appointment will last for the rest of Powell’s term, which is until April, 1991. At that time, the appointed alderman may choose to run for re_election.

Sparrow said he extended the deadline so students would be able to apply for the job. “I wanted students to have a chance to become acclimated to their studies.”

Sparrow has put out the word to various campus information centers such as the Student Association “so that everybody has an opportunity.”
