‘Somewhere in Time’: a classic love story that combines old-fashioned romance and a twist of fate; travels well through time

By Gina Quilici

What ever happened to the classic love story?

Nowadays it seems that a love story isn’t complete if there isn’t a torrid love affair, murder, drugs, bizarre, kinky sex scenes or any combination of the above.

Good, old fashioned true love with a twist of raw passion, thwarted by fate or hardship has become almost extinct in today’s movie releases.

Thus, it only seems logical that in order to once again experience a good, well-made love story (at a reasonable price) one must follow the trend and find solace in the neighborhood video store.

Somewhere amidst the many aisles of video cassettes one can find a guaranteed, entertaining love story that intrigues the viewer rather than drowns him in sappy or wasteful content.

The answer to the dilemma is simple. Look for the video cassette sleeve with the name “Somewhere In Time.”

“Somewhere In Time” boasts a talented cast coupled with a timelessly unique story.

Christopher Reeve plays Richard Collier, a budding playwright who, through a twist of events, becomes obsessed with finding a special woman from his past.

Richard’s quest is not as easy as it sounds. In order to find the woman he seeks, Richard must travel nearly sixty years into the past.

Impossible? Not according to one of Richard’s old college professors, whom Richard incidentally consults for the techniques of his time travel theory.

Through the use of intense mind control and self-hypnosis for several days, Richard does indeed trancend the boundaries of time.

After much investigation, and amazement by his feat, Richard locates Elise Mc Kenna, played by Jane Seymore; the woman he traveled so far to meet.

At first Elise, a famous actress, is not at all impressed by Richard. She has no idea where he has come from or who he is. Richard appears to be just like any other male fan.

Persistance becomes Richards winning ticket, and after many failed requests for a date Elise finally softens and agrees to meet him after her rehearsal.

Their dates together become more and more frequent and the strong attraction they feel toward each other becomes evident. They can no longer deny what they feel.

Fate can not resist tampering with their more than perfect love story, and a series of tragic events befalls the pair.

If all didn’t seem lost for the pair already, Richard suddenly finds himself hurled back to the present due to carelessness on his part.

It’s tragic in that Richard and Elise were just beginning to realize what they had together. All the emotion they fought so hard to release was done in vain. Torn away from them in less than a split second.

The ending is full of surprises and tantalizes the mind.

What makes the movie truly excellent is that it causes the viewer to feel the same emotions and amazement that the characters do.

The content is fascinating and really challenges the mind. The ideas are portrayed to the fullest extent of reality.

“Somewhere In Time” makes you believe in true love all over again, and leaves you with the warm heartfelt question of “what if?”
