Congress is currently in the process of voting another $1.5 million a day to El Salvador, despite the fact that ARENA, the “Death Squad”, Party is now in power.

Since 1980 the U.S. has poured over $3 billion into El Salvador, which has been used to bomb whole villages, leaving more than 70,000 dead and a million homeless. Former Salvadoran President Duarte probably did want peace for his people, but he was totally incapable of controlling the military or the corruption in his own government. With the U.S. footing over half the total budget of the country, the Salvadoran economy is in a shambles—with the wealthy sending millions abroad while the poor are condemned to live in poverty and terror.

Despite the current talk of negotiations with the rebels who they’ve never been able to defeat with all our aid, we don’t have to look far to see the real intentions of Cristiani and ARENA. In the few months they have been in power, there have been more than 1,000 death squad victims, including human rights workers, students, teachers, farmers and union members. Cristiani’s new penal “reform” would make it a crime against the state to peacefully demonstrate, to criticize the government or even report on such criticism. Anyone who seeks to bring about change is labelled “communist” and the defense minister states “the armed forces are prepared to kill 200,000 to 300,000 if that’s what it takes.” With our money?
