New IFC policy helps increase pledge figures
September 13, 1989
Fraternities implemented a new rush policy and received 20 percent more pledges than in the fall semester 1988.
Steve Cohen, treasurer/secretary of the Interfraternity Council, said “The new rush policy is designed to increase the number of houses rushees visit in an attempt to gain a better understanding of Greek Row and the diversity of the different chapters.”
Greek Row was divided into three different regions. Rushees were required to visit at least four houses in the three different areas.
Each house had a sign in sheet to keep track of who visted their house. Each rushee was issued a card from IFC which would be stamped by each house he visited. When he accepted a bid from a house he would turn in his rush card. “The new policy seemed to run as smoothly as possible. I have no doubt that the rush program will increase and become more efficient,” Cohen said.
“This year the amount of people coming out to Greek Row was about the same as last year, but the first night was better attended than in previous years,” he said.
Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity received the highest number of pledges. Mike McCartney, the fraternity’s social chairman, said the fraternity issued 40 bids and all were signed. A signed bid is an acceptance to pledge a fraternity.
“The rushees said they liked talking to us,” McCartney said. He feels that the diverse aspects of the house contributed to the high number of pledges.
Sigma Chi fraternity also had a large number of men joining their house. Sigma Chi President Kevin Meadows said 30 men signed bids with the fraternity. “Everybody’s really proud of it. We took a lot of good guys. We let them know what happened to us. We wanted to let people know we are into racial awareness activities and we will continue the programs even after the suspension.”
All of the fraternities in the IFC held rush, except for the Sigma Pi fraternity whose rushing privileges have been suspended from an alcohol related incident last semester. The following houses reported these pledging figures: Delta Chi, 20; Delta Sigma Phi, 28; Delta Upsilon, 20; Kappa Sigma, 13; Lambda Chi Alpha, 16; Phi Kappa Theta, 25; Phi Sigma Kappa, 15; Pi Kappa Alpha, 25; Sigma Alpha Mu, 22; Sigma Nu, 21; Sigma Phi Epsilon, 29; Theta Chi, 7.
