GLU one of oldest gay organizations

The NIU Gay/Lesbian Union is the second oldest gay organization in Illinois and is one of the oldest in the United States. It was recognized by the NIU Student Association on April 12, 1970.

The GLU serves two important functions. First, the GLU provides opportunities for lesbians, gay men and interested persons to come together to share common interests and experiences and to find the support that a group can provide.

This organization seeks to provide a comfortable, supportive atmosphere for the growth of self-understanding and self-esteem in gay and lesbian individuals at NIU and in the DeKalb community. Second, the GLU is an educational organization working to foster an understanding of homosexuality by informing students at NIU and the community about the services of the GLU. The GLU seeks to bring this about by sponsoring various programs and events. Events include dances, discussion groups, coming-out groups, Gay/Lesbian Awareness Week and much more. More information about upcoming events will be posted in the classified section of The Northern Star or call 753-0584.

Welcome back! I wish everyone a very successful school year.
