SA paves the way for upcoming year

This fall, the Student Association is back with recharged energies and fresh ideas. Our packed agenda will improve our campus environment and the spending of students’ dollars. I would like to expose you to much of this agenda and allow you the opportunity to participate in the process of improving our university and students’ position on campus.

Some priorities of my administration will be to scrutinize student fees, give significant input to any changes of Holmes Student Center space utilization, and expand our Student Political Education and Action Committee to address national and international issues as well as local.

Over the summer, I revived a Student Committee on Financial Aid which is working on problems students face when using financial aid services. I am currently working to establish an Advisory Board for the financial aid office. I also oversee and give duties to nine advisers who appoint committees to work on their specific agendas.

The Academic Affairs Adviser, Willie Fowler, will be working to implement the cultural pluralism class, begin a file of old exams made available to students and implement a buddy system for incoming freshmen.

Morenike Cheatom is the Campus Welfare Adviser. Her main objectives are to incorporate bike paths on campus, diminish the use of styrofoam on campus and verify the safety of the water students drink.

Our Community Affairs Adviser, Brian Subatich, works as a liaison to the City of DeKalb to improve students’ housing and the students’ position on issues that come before the City Council. One of Brian’s first issues will be to establish a resolution requiring landlords to give tenants interest on their last month’s rent.

Dave Pack, the Mass Transit Adviser, maintains the day-to-day operations of our bus system and the Late Nite Ride Service. His committee will also perform surveys on bus services and assess the effectiveness of each bus route.

The Minority Relations Adviser, Joan Clay, will work to establish a section in the library specifically for minority literature, establish the cultural pluralism class and organize forums and workshops related to minority issues on our campus.

Chris Hudders, the Public Relations Adviser, will establish a self-supportive SA newsletter, monitor a “Student Voice” complaint system on campus and organize an SA Open House.

Our Recreation Adviser is David Burke. He will work to establish more weight room space on campus, be an advocate for club sports and scrutinize the budget of the Office of Campus Recreation.

Tom Elkins, our Research Adviser, will organize our SA archives, retrieve information asked of him and keep SA records.

Vice President Steve Coloia chairs the Internal Affairs Committee which oversees changes to our bylaws. He also is responsible for processing recognition to almost 190 Student Association-recognized organizations.

Treasurer Bruce Williams chairs the Finance Committee which scrutinizes all student organizations’ budgets that are allocated a total of about $800,000 by the SA.

The SA has its own Recycling Station located directly west of Stevenson Towers South. The station accepts glass, aluminum cans, newspapers, computer paper and plastic milk jugs. Director David Broustis hires employees and volunteers who maintain the recycling station.

You can also improve your campus by serving on one of several student or university committees or run for the SA Senate. Elections will be Sept. 13 and 14.

The SA is located on the second floor of the student center. Please stop in! Your ideas and dedication can have a very real impact on your campus.
