OCR offers multi-dime ensional programs

Ashley Sweda, new trip coordinator for NIU’s Office of Campus Recreation, plans to establish multi-dimensional programming that is attractive to all types of people.
Sweda said he intends to look at the needs of different subgroups of people and plan events that are interesting to everyone. “If the options are kept open, there will be more areas hit and the program will be more successful,” he said.
The Bridger Shoshone Wilderness Adventure, which will be held from August 14 to 24, will feature excursions in backpacking, fishing, rockclimbing and photography, as well as tours in nature and astronomy. Other participants in this Wyoming trip might wish to go rafting or to “simply bask in the hot springs.”
Sweda, who received an NIU master’s degree in outdoor education, has also planned a kite-flying day for October. OCR will provide materials for students, faculty and staff to make their own kites and the Chicago Skyliners, a professional kite-flying club, will perform and assist in kite-making at NIU. Other possible trips include local canoe outings, eagle watching and biking trips.
The programs are open to all students, faculty and staff, whether they are beginners or “die hards,” he said. He hopes to attract special interest groups such as the Residence Hall and Student associations by personally making each group aware of the available services.
One distinct benefit of participating in an OCR trip is the minimal cost. Since student fees pay for a great deal of the trip, including transportation, equipment and coordination, students can participate with very little investment. “OCR trips provide a fun and relaxing atmosphere for meeting someone new,” Sweda said.
Sweda is looking for qualified people to help lead trips. He is anxious to hear comments and suggestions for activities and can be reached at the OCR office.
