Davis gets Tiberwolf tryout
July 25, 1989
Former NIU basketball MVP Rodney Davis hopes to make the transition from a Huskie to a Timberwolf.
That’s as in National Basketball Association Minnesota Timberwolves member. The 6-3, 186-pound guard participated in the NBA expansion franchise’s free agent tryout camp last weekend (July 20-23) in Minneapolis, Minn. Players selected join the Timberwolves’ draft selections for competition in a San Antonio summer league.
Davis received his call from Minnesota Director of Player Personnel Billy McKinney, who had also called the two-time Huskie MVP to a tryout last summer with the Chicago Bulls. McKinney was then vice-president of basketball operations for the Bulls.
In addition to playing for the Bulls in a 1988 summer league, Davis was also a fifth-round selection by the Chicago Express of the World Basketball League and a sixth-round pick by the Quad City Thunder of the Continental Basketball Association.
NIU’s No. 2 all-time assist man with 332 set-ups, Davis also rates No. 9 in career scoring with 1,175 points.
