‘Sycamore’ tops ‘DeKalb’ in spring football contest
April 30, 1989
Once again, the weather took a turn for the worse when the Huskies took the field for Saturday’s Red-White spring football game.
The bright, sunny skies that graced the pre-game festivities took the afternoon off, only to reappear with about seven minutes left in the game.
Team Sycamore (Red), led by quarterback Rob Rugai’s 88 yards passing and 28 yards rushing, made the best of the day with a 13-9 victory over Team DeKalb (White).
DeKalb won the opening toss and came out with two quick first downs. Adam Dach gained nine yards on the first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Stacey Robinson followed with a 25-yard gain that put the ball just shy of midfield. Then they went cold.
Neither team scored in the first 10-minute quarter, and more than half of the second quarter passed before John Ivanic kicked a 23-yard field goal to put Sycamore up 3-0.
DeKalb evened the score on their next possession with a 35-yard kick by Matt Golden, on a drive highlighted by a 24-yard run by Robinson.
Rugai amassed most of his passing yardage on the next Sycamore drive with a 32-yard pass to Bob Kolowski and a 38-yard toss to a wide open Mark Clancy for a touchdown. Ivanic’s extra point made it 10-3 at halftime.
Sycamore went up 13-3 with 4:31 left in the third quarter on a 27-yard kick by Ivanic. Golden missed a 33-yarder with :22 to go in the third.
Tyrone Isaac went over the top with 3:24 left in the game for a one-yard touchdown that closed the score to 13-9. Robinson’s attempt for a two-point conversion failed.
“I kind of figured it would be a close game,” said Cary Caliendo, who finished with 11 tackles for Sycamore. “I didn’t know what to feel. Almost all the starting defense was on Red (Sycamore) and almost all the starting offense was on White (DeKalb).”
While both quarterbacks combined for 8-17 passing, coach Jerry Pettibone was pleased with the passing game.
“I was satisfied with the passing game,” he said. “It doesn’t work well against our defense, but it will against the three-deep (defense) which we’ll see a lot of next year.”
Patrick Bryant led Sycamore with 12 tackles, followed by Caliendo with 11 and James Randall with 10. Tim Green led the DeKalb defense with seven tackles. Kevin Cassidy and Mike Jordan finished with six each.
Robinson carried 20 times for 69 yards for DeKalb while Isaac and Antonio Davis each gained 31 yards on the ground.
