Committee to discuss HSC spatial plan
April 21, 1989
Those charged with the task of determining whether there is enough space in the Holmes Student Center to house additional offices will meet today to see if they agree so the project can progress.
Student Association President Paula Radtke, who is also co-chairman of Student Services and Activities Space Study Committee, said she is unsure whether Judd Baker, the student center director, and members of the space study committee agree on Baker’s purpose in analyzing the center.
Radtke said she will meet with Jon Dalton, vice president for student affairs and committee co-chairman, SA President-Elect Huda Scheidelman and Baker sometime today.
The committee held its final meeting on March 10 and requested that Baker review the available space in the student center to determine whether it can be reorganized to hold additional organizations.
“Part of my concern is I don’t think we should really be directing Mr. Baker to do anything he wasn’t charged by the committee to do,” Dalton said.
The proposal for Baker to analyze the student center was suggested by students in place of hiring an outside consultant, Dalton said.
Baker is to review the space in the student center and “offer his expert opinions (to Dalton and Radtke.)
Dalton said Baker was given “great independence” in making his recommendation and should offer any additional suggestions he might have.
Students “feel (Baker) can move people around and kick people out” of the student center if their office does not need to be located in the center, Radtke said.
“All I’m going to try to do is see if there is a way to shuffle things around and report my findings to the committee co-chairmen,” Baker said.
“I don’t think everybody’s going to get everything they want, and I don’t think they expect to,” he said.
It will take about two weeks to analyze the student center space after the SA has given him the space requests from student groups, Baker said.
The SA was supposed to give student group requests for space to Baker on Thursday, but Radtke said they will wait until after she meets with him today.
The space analysis will begin after Baker receives the student group requests from the SA, he said.
Questionaires about space needs were given to organizations already located in the center and to groups not run by students who have requested space within the center, Baker said. The information requested included the various offices’ privacy needs, visibility and the amount of time the office is used, he said.
The recommendations requested from Baker will be submitted to Dalton and Radtke by May 5, Baker said.
