Soviet economy lecture

Economist Paul Gregory will give a lecture entitled “Perestroika and the New Soviet Economy” Friday at 10 a.m. in room 120A of DuSable Hall. Gregory is a professor at the University of Houston and recently returned from a ten-day meeting with Soviet officials sponsored by the Soviet Academy of Sciences. The lecture is open to the public.

Eating disorders workshop

The NIU Association of Counseling and Development is sponsoring a workshop entitled, “Get the Basics About Eating Disorders” Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in room 424 of Graham Hall.

The workshop will focus on psychological and nutritional aspects of eating disorders. Speakers will include Kathy Hotelling, director of NIU’s counseling and student development center, Ellen Parham, NIU professor of human and family resources, and Melissa Davis, graduate student in counselor education. There is a $2 fee for ACD members and a $3 fee for non-members.

Springfest block party

Sigma Nu fraternity is sponsoring a Springfest Block Party Saturday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Sigma Nu house, 914 Greenbrier Rd. Five bands, including The Renfield’s, Redline, Essentials, Area Code 815 and Bullwinkle’s Children, will play. A raffle, food vendors and events sponsored by the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity will be featured.

Andean Ensemble concert

NIU Andean Ensemble, directed by Don Funes, will perform Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Music Building’s Recital Hall. Music from the Andes Mountains will be featured. The concert is part of NIU’s April celebration of Latino Festival Month and is open to the public.

COMS anniversary events

The Communications Department will end its 50th anniversary celebration with three events this week.

A panel discussion on careers in communication will be held Friday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in room 204 of DuSable Hall. Communications graduates will discuss corporate and media employment opportunities. The event is sponsored by the NIU Advertising Club and the Alpha Epsilon Rho Broadcasting Fraternity.

The COMS Olympics will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the East Lagoon. All proceeds will benefit the department’s Communication Studies Ettema Scholarship Fund.

A reception honoring the 1989 graduates of the communication studies department will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Matthew Boone’s Restaurant, 122 S. First St. The event is by invitation only.

Student input requested

Student input is needed for a campus public interest project. Anyone wishing to comment on the need for construction of a new parking lot should call Janet at 753-5924 before April 25.

Children’s art work featured

NIU’s Swen Parson Gallery is hosting an exhibit of children’s art works until May 14. The exhibit is part of the Crayola Dream-Makers III National Art Education Program and features 75 childrens’ works from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

The children, who range in age from kindergarten through sixth grade, used the themes of “Me and My World,” “The World Nearby” and “All Over the World” to create their works.

Las Vegas photos on display

A photo exhibit by Chicago artist Jay Wolke is on display until May 14 in the Swen Parson MediaSpace. “Las Vegas Portraits” is the title of the exhibit, which offers the viewer a look at both typical and atypical views of the Nevada city.
