Outstanding Young Man

NIU graduate student Clifford Ihejieto-Aharanwa has been selected as a 1988 Outstanding Young Man of America. The award is presented as recognition of outstanding professional achievement, superior leadership ability and exceptional service to the community. I-Aharanwa is from Nigeria and came to the United States in 1978. He has been at NIU since January 1983.
Spanish literature program
A program about Spanish literature entitled “Sixth Symposium on Contemporary Spain: The Spanish Novel,” is scheduled for today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center’s Skyroom. All lectures will be in Spanish.
General registration is $15, and the program is free to NIU students. Call 753-0277 to register.
Day-long artists conference
A day-long conference for visual artists entitled “Business of Art,” will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in NIU’s Visual Arts Building. Lecture topics will include “Taxes and the Artist,” “Relations Between Art and the Media” and “The New Breed of Art Agents and the Out-of-Chicago Art Gallery.” Registration fee is $25 for artists and other professionals and $15 for students. The registration deadline is April 28. People can register by calling the College of Continuing Education Office at 753-0277.
Emergence Dance Theatre
The Emergence Dance Theatre will conclude their 1989 series with performances Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Dance Center for the Merging Arts, located at 804 1/2 Market St. in DeKalb. NIU art professor Norman Magden choreographed one of the featured works entitled “Kinesthesis.”

Silverette tryouts to be held
Tryouts for the NIU Silverette Dance and Drill Squad will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday at 7 p.m. in room 171 of the Music Building. Those interested in trying out must attend both sessions and wear proper work-out attire. For more information, call 753-1042.
Program to hand out coupons
NIU Gerontology Program students will assist in the distribution of coupons in the Holmes Student Center until May 13 to help feed the elderly DeKalb residents. Each “McDonald’s Cares” coupon turned in with the purchase of a Big Mac and medium-size soft drink will help the Feed Our Older DeKalb and Meals on Wheels organizations.
The coupons can be used at DeKalb and Sycamore McDonald’s locations. Coupons also can be obtained in DeKalb at the Pine Acres Care Center in Barb City Manor and at the DeKalb 4-Cs office, 145 Fisk Ave. The McDonald’s donation program will be held during the first two weeks of May, which has been designated as Older American Month.
Children’s art exhibit
NIU’s Swen Parson Gallery is hosting an exhibit of children’s art works until May 14. The exhibit is part of the Crayola Dream-Makers III National Art Education Program and features the works of 75 children from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin.
The children, who range in age from kindergarten through sixth grade, used the themes of “Me and My World,” “The World Nearby” and “All Over the World” to create their works.
Las Vegas photos featured
Chicago photographer Jay Wolke’s exhibition of Las Vegas photographs will be featured in the Swen Parson Hall Media Space until May 14. The photos show both typical and atypical views of the Nevada city.
