The weather once again took its toll on the NIU baseball club last weekend.
The Huskies’ second game on Sunday against Loyola was called due to rain, but not before NIU recorded a 3-0 weekend.
Saturday, the Huskies hosted the DePaul Blue Demons for a doubleheader. In the first game, Chris Syco threw a three-hitter and struck out eight on the way to an 11-1 victory by NIU. Jim Skowronski went 2-3 with four RBIs to pace the Huskies.
In the nightcap, Won Kim pitched two shutout innings for the win and Mark Suhanek followed with one shutout inning to earn the save. Chris Kzitek, Brian Wold and John Krest combined for four hits and four RBIs in a 7-3 NIU win.
Sunday against Loyola, Mike Osborne allowed only one earned run and struck out nine while Skowronski and Kevin Rose combined to go 4-5 and reached base seven times along the way to a 7-4 Huskie victory.
Thursday, NIU (8-2) will start a weekend road trip at North Central College. Saturday, they will take on Morton College and they will finish the weekend in Milwaukee against Marquette.
At the Midwest Water Polo Championship last weekend at Anderson Hall, the NIU water polo club lost its first match before rallying to win the double-elimination tournament.
In the first match, NIU lost to Iowa 12-11. The Huskies’ next match paired them with Wisconsin, who they defeated 8-6. Their chance to gain revenge on Iowa came in their next match with an 11-7 victory. NIU then defeated Illinois 12-7, and Northwestern -4 to earn a spot in the championship game.
In the final against Michigan, NIU was led by Joe Billish and Chris Kerstin (three goals each), en route to a 10-9 victory.
For the tournament, Billish had 17 goals, Kerstin 9, Jeremy Walsh 9, and Chris Parker 3.
