Drug-related arrests made

Two NIU students were arrested Thursday by DeKalb Police after one of the students sold cocaine to another.

Paul R. Batchen, 24, 1120 Varsity Blvd., is charged with unlawful delivery of more than 15 grams of a controlled substance. Batchen posted $50,000 bond for his release.

Mark D. Schrepferman, 824 Greenbrier Road, Apt. 8, is charged with unlawful possession of less than 15 grams of a controlled substance. Schrepferman posted a $2,500 bond for his release.

DeKalb Police Detective William Thompson said the men were arrested at Batchen’s residence, but he declined to say how long the investigation had been going on or around whom the investigation centered.

Thompson said he does not anticipate any further NIU connections in the incident, but said “I don’t know for sure” if other students are involved.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Michael Coghlan said if Batchen is found guilty, he faces six to 30 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. Schrepferman faces one to three years in prison and a $15,000 fine if convicted, he said.

Coghlan said he believes further related arrests involving NIU students are not likely. However, he emphasized that in drug-related criminal activity, anything is possible. Coghlan declined further comment on the incident because he had not had time to review the complaint, and it would be inappropriate to comment on an on-going investigation, he said.

Police found over 30 grams of a substance believed to contain cocaine that had a street value of about $2,000. A “large amount” of money, also was confiscated from one of the suspects.

The arrests of Batchen and Schrepferman are the second drug-related arrests involving NIU students in the past week.

Eric B. Anderson was arrested and charged by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department for possession of cannabis. Sean Da Kittrell-Shaw was arrested and charged by the sheriff’s department for unlawful delivery of cocaine. Both men were arrested March 24.
