Although two of the four drug-related arrests in DeKalb Friday involved NIU students, wide-spread university drug connections are not suspected in the case.
DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said a “major” involvement with NIU students and the individuals arrested on drug related charges has not been found at this point in the investigation.
Scott would not rule out a minimal involvement with other NIU students, but said “at this time in the investigation,” students are not involved with those arrested in the selling and distribution aspects of the narcotics.
DeKalb County State’s Attorney Mike Coghlan said Eric B. Anderson, 519 DeKalb Ave., Apt. B, and Sean Da Kittrell-Shaw, 319 Roosevelt St., Apt. 3, DeKalb, were arrested Friday by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department. Both men are NIU students.
Anderson was charged with unlawful delivery of more than 10, but less than 30, grams of cannabis. He faces one to three years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Kittrell-Shaw was charged with unlawful delivery of cocaine and faces from four to 15 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
Jonas W. Kidd, 519 DeKalb Ave., Apt. B, is charged with unlawful delivery of a look-alike drug and faces from two to five years in prison and up to a $150,000 fine.
William P. Williams, 1070 Garden Road, DeKalb, was charged with delivery of a controlled substance. Williams tried to deliver less than one gram of cocaine and faces from three to seven years in prison and a $200,000 fine.
The sheriff’s department made the arrests during an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking in the DeKalb County area, Scott said.
Lynn Richards of the NIU Students’ Legal Assistance Office would not confirm or deny if Anderson and Kittrell-Shaw have requested assistance. Any comment in this situation would “violate the attorney-client privilege,” she said.
Coghlan said it would be inappropriate to comment further on the arrests because of the ongoing investigation.
