New club requests SA status

A new NIU women’s organization is seeking Student Association recognition this month, which has been designated Women’s History Month at NIU.

The constitution of the organization, which is called the Women’s Alliance, states that the group “was created to support and unite women. This organization will provide an opportunity for women with like interests to gather and share information.”

“We saw a need within the university to promote the education of women,” said Lori Halverson-Wentie, a member of the group. She said the constitution directly states that purpose and also that “our concern is foremost for women.”

Carrie Megli, a founding member of the Women’s Alliance, said, “We’re interested in drawing from the female student population. We don’t exclude anyone.” Under SA rules, an organization seeking recognition must not discriminate.

Co-chairman Susan Vermeulen explained that although women are apt to feel more comfortable in an all-female environment, men who are sincerely interested are welcome to join the group.

The constitution states “membership is open regardless of … sex.”

Fellow chairman Jennifer Herrick said the group’s activities include field trips, discussion groups, lectures, concerts and workshops. A fall retreat is scheduled to organize upcoming programs. The organization currently is helping with the Women’s History Month programs.

Alliance members also emphasized that community members and faculty, as well as students, are invited to join. “Anyone with ideas can bring them to the meetings,” said member Ann Gulden.

Meetings will be held the first and third Thursday of the month at 5 p.m. at Wirtz House, 305 Normal Road.
