Run sets off Greek Week ’89

NIU’s 1989 Greek Week kicked off Sunday afternoon with an torch run through Greek Row and Greek Sing, a three hour variety show held in the Holmes Student Center Duke Ellington Ballroom.

Rob Perry, Interfraternity Council chairman for Greek Week, said the main idea of Greek Week is “to promote greek life on campus and in the community.”

Perry said goals for Greek Week 1989 are to promote interaction through the greek system, to reach out to non-greeks on campus, to educate NIU faculty about greek life and to involve the Black Greek Council in Greek Week.

“We want to show the university that we are not here just to party, but rather to help others by reaching goals we set as students in our community and society,” Perry said.

The week will include activities and events open to greek and non-greek students, he said.

Events include a performance by hypnotist Jim Wand on Tuesday, a lecture by Ed King on “The Secret Thoughts of Ritual” Wednesday, a Family Feud game which will focus on greek life and NIU, and a social Friday night in the Duke Ellington Ballroom.

Three individuals will be chosen this week for 1989 Outstanding Greek awards. One individual from IFC, one from Panhellenic Council and one from Black Greek Council will be chosen by alumni, faculty and NIU administrators for this honor.
