Pre-business choice night

Pre-business students with questions about requirements and internship possibilities might find answers Tuesday at the Carl Sandburg Auditorium in the Holmes Student Center.

The College of Business Career Advisory Board will sponsor a “Sophomore Major/Career Choice Nite” for all pre-business students from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Sandburg Auditorium.

At the meeting, students will be presented with different majors within the College of Business. Sometimes students decide to change their intended majors because they find one that is of more interest to them, Dawn Cater, a student business major and organizer of the event, said.

College of Business secretary Bonnie Ward said the event has been biannually for the past three years. Last fall, more than 300 students attended the event.

Students often make important decisions about their future during or after the event.

Potential business majors might also decide to change majors after: realizing the department’s minimum grade point average requirements, not being able to get their first choice of majors and/or gaining personal insight about their academic and career goals, Cater said.

However, just because the event is called “Choice Nite,” Cater said students do not have to make decisions about their majors that night.

The formats of the meetings have changed semester to semester since the department started having the events. Last fall, department chairmen made informal presentations. The students broke up into groups afterward for more personalized attention to their individual concerns.

The meeting will begin with a panel discussion by the heads of the business department, Cater said. The students will then attend two advisory question and answer sessions with Senior business majors. Finally, groups of students will meet with advisers.

Cater, a senior adviser on the Career Advisory Board, will participate on the discussion panel and try to answer students’ questions, she said.

Students also should find answers to their questions in a handbook that will be distributed at the meeting. The handbook contains information about: various requirements, dates and deadlines concerning a business major, student business organizations, and curriculum plans for each major.

Information about internships will also be presented.

Students who miss the event and the information presented have the chance to attend another meeting during the spring semester.

In previous years, the business department also has offered events in February, Trish Schlist, an employee in the College of Business office, said.
