Benefit to aid needy children
December 1, 1988
The salvation army plans to collect toys to give away to needy children at a benefit concert slated for this weekend.
The concert is scheduled for Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at GE Union Hall, 14th and State St., DeKalb. Those who attend will be asked to donate toys.
Goken said the salvation army assists more than 2,000 people during the holidays and 700 are children. She said the benefit has been “moderately successful” in the past.
The toys will go to the salvation army, and the organization will distribute the toys to needy children in DeKalb County. “We really appreciate every toy that’s donated,” Barbara Goken, office manager for the salvation army said.
Gary Mullis, who has arranged the event for the past 19 years, said musicians will be performing Country, Bluegrass, Gospel and Christmas music at the “Toys for Kids” benefit.
