Little sister party defies suspension

NIU administration condemned a Sigma Chi little sister party thrown Saturday, because it violated a suspension against the fraternity even though members received the permission of the greek adviser.

Barbara Henley, assistant vice president for student affairs said Monday, “The university does not support Sigma Chi’s social activities with its little sisters.”

She said that in light of the suspension the fraternity received, “Sigma Chi’s involvement with the little sisters will not be permitted.”

Jeff Cufaude, greek adviser for University Programming and Activites, said members of the fraternity contacted him prior to the party on behalf of the little sisters. He said because the party took place off campus, was not a fraternity function and was not fraternity funded, he gave members permission.

“The little sisters are not the fraternity. The sanctions do not carry over to them,” Cufaude said.

Henley said, however, the fraternity is suspended for one year, therefore its little sister program is included. The little sisters are an extension of the fraternity and cannot “sponsor social activities in the name of the fraternity or under the guise of the fraternity.”

She said the fact that fraternity members sought permission from Cufaude “says to us this is fraternity-related. Jeff Cufaude never would have gotten that call if it was an individual activity.”

Both Henley and Cufaude agreed there are still a number of questions about the specifics of the sanctions that have to be worked out.

The sanctions currently state the fraternity is suspended for one year and cannot hold rush, participate in intramural sports or any social activities.

The fraternity was suspended after five members performed a skit in blackface judged as racially offensive, during a Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority fundraiser Nov. 20 at the Jungle, 1027 W. Hillcrest Drive.
