Bush the best option for office
November 4, 1988
This is the last of The Northern Star’s political endorsements for Tuesday’s general election.
George Bush should be the next U.S. president.
While the Reagan administration has failed in providing support for social programs, foreign policy gains and the relatively good economic status of the country warrant Bush in office.
The Reagan policy of bargaining from a position of strength appears to have made major strides with the Soviet Union. The Soviets have left Afghanistan and signed an INF treaty. Recently, they have announced the possible release of political prisoners. Such concessions are unlikely if the United States adopts a weak foreign policy.
Reagan’s policies seem to have more hope with the third world. Former President Jimmy Carter left office amid embarrassment when several Americans were held hostage in Iran. The Reagan administration’s refusal to concede or negotiate with terrorists should be continued.
Despite the increasing number of hostile takeovers and Black Monday, the economy is in pretty good shape. Fears that a Dukakis win would drive up inflation are warranted.
A major issue for the next president is the appointment of Supreme Court justices. As many as four appointments could come up during the next four years. One fear is that Bush will appoint ultra-conservative justices who might change Supreme Court rulings. Bush has shown a willingness to bow to conservative pressure with his choice of Dan Quayle as vice president.
Hopefully, Bush will follow his own convictions during the next four years.
