Holiday a reminder to be thankful
November 22, 1988
Each year, when Thanksgiving approaches, many of us think about the things we are thankful for.
For most of us—especially college students—there’s a long list. Most of us have family, friends, health, a place to live and even the chance at a college education.
The recent deaths of several NIU faculty members and students should make us realize just how good most of us have it. All too often, the insignificant problems in life get us down when we really should be thankful for the positive things about our lives.
Sure, the little things in life count, too, but we should always keep life in perspective. We should never forget about the one gift each of us has that we should be most thankful for—life itself.
When we go home this week, most of us will celebrate with friends and family by eating a big dinner and maybe watching a football game. Many of us won’t even think about what we’re celebrating. However, we really shouldn’t let the meaning of this holiday escape us.
We should all use this holiday as a time to reflect about the things we have which make our lives so special. By doing this, we can also better appreciate the struggle of less fortunate people who, in many cases, are just trying to survive.
When you get home, savor the special moments you have with family and friends. It is times such as these when we are reminded of just how much we have to be thankful for.
One final reminder: When you’re on the roads this week, be safe. We all know holidays are infamous for heavy traffic and accidents. Let’s get all NIU students and faculty back from this holiday alive—only then can we be truly thankful.
