Reinstate Palmer
November 18, 1988
I find it necessary to formally go on record as to the recent decision not to renew Martha Palmer’s employment contract with NIU’s Office of Special Projects in the CHANCE program. As the case stands with Tito Veneza, the decision, from my own ideological perspective, was made in a capricious and arbitrary manner. I ask Tendaji Ganges to reconsider.
Surely, Ms. Palmer’s work as a CHANCE counselor clearly reflect her strong record of service to the university, her unit department and the students. She has served on numerous university committees. She has provided the much needed guidance and leadership to the Black Greek Council. She served as the spokesperson for the Chicano Student Movement (M.E.Ch.A.) during the hearings on minority student access to higher education and on many other occasions.
On the other hand, Dr. Antonio Gonzales has indicated that he had no input into the decision highlighting Ms. Palmer’s last six months. He alluded that the decisions are being made at the top, then passed down the chain of command.
Consequently, I strongly support Ms. Palmer’s appeal for unconditional reinstatement as a CHANCE counselor, for she is both inspirational and dedicated to students.
El racismo y el sexismo seran conquistados en esta universidad…con safos.
