Recall statute tops agenda
October 9, 1988
The DeKalb City Council tonight will discuss researching a recall ordinance that would enable ward constituents to vote for removal of an elected official from office.
Proposed by 5th Ward Alderman Bessie Chronopoulos, the recall ordinance is directed at 7th Ward Alderman Mark Powell, whose behavior has disturbed other council members. Presently, City Attorney Ronald Matekaitis said he does not know whether a recall ordinance would apply to aldermen, including Powell, currently serving in office.
Concerning the proposed ordinance, DeKalb Mayor Greg Sparrow said, “His (Powell’s) actions have called particular attention to a law that would address them.”
Tonight’s council meeting will be at 8 p.m. at the city Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St.
