Softball squad finishes fall with teo wins, loss at Iowa

Let’s play three.

The NIU softball team did—winning two and losing one—Sunday at the Iowa Invitational in Iowa City.

The competition marked the end of the fall season during which the Huskies posted a 9-5 record. NIU started the day against the Nebraska Cornhuskers who handed the Huskies its only loss, 6-2. NIU then proceeded to take games from Iowa, 7-2, and Drake, 7-0.

Nebraska and NIU played four innings deadlocked at 1-1 before the Cornhuskers scored twice in the fifth inning for a 3-1 lead. UN scored three more times in the seventh for the final 6-2 tally.

Taking the loss for NIU was Shari Edwards. She got little support from her teammates as NIU committed four errors in the game. Edwards’ record for the fall dropped to 2-2.

The Huskies rebounded from that opening loss to have seven runners cross the plate against Iowa while stranding 14 others. NIU scored single runs in the first and second innings and then exploded for five runs in the fourth. Iowa managed two runs in the bottom of the sixth to settle for the 7-2 loss.

NIU continued its winning ways in the final game of the round-robin play, defeating Drake 7-0. Senior All-American Jill Justin got things going for NIU in the third with a solo home run. The fifth inning provided all the insurance the Huskies needed as they scored six runs.

“Everybody played and contributed today,” NIU coach Dee Abrahamson said. “We hit well and played good defense. Beth (Schrader, two wins) looked good and came on strong at the end.”

Schrader improved her fall record to 6-2 with the victories as she gave up six hits against Iowa and three in the shutout of Drake.

The Huskies’ next action will be March 12 against Southern Illinois at Tallahassee, Fla.
