Fliers spur questions as to SCOPA’s status
October 20, 1988
Fliers posted around campus this week have again raised questions about the status of the Student Committee On Political Action
The fliers, which advertise a lecture presented by Chief Justice William Rehnquist Thursday night, feature captions such as “I hate abortion” and “I love the death penalty” written above a photograph of Rehnquist. The flier also states, “Let’s show the politicians that we hate it when goons like this get appointed to the court!”
SCOPA sponsored the fliers.
As a result, Student Association Sen. Michael Stumpf said he is considering discussing another restructuring proposal for SCOPA at Sunday’s senate meeting which would give the senate final approval on issues that SCOPA takes action on.
Stumpf said he spoke with 30 to 40 students about the fliers and that “all but two” of the students considered the fliers inappropriate.
“None of them liked the idea that student money was going to pay for the fliers,” Stumpf said. “The senate rewrote the bylaws (concerning SCOPA) to keep this kind of thing from happening. I think that, considering the way this thing is worded, there is a possibility for a lawsuit.”
SCOPA Chairman Rene Lilly, however, said the fliers were written in that fashion “to get people’s attention. I honestly didn’t think it would be that big a deal.”
Lilly said the fliers were approved by the only two SCOPA members that have been approved by the senate, herself and Senate Speaker Joe Annunzio.
Annunzio said, “I assumed (approving the fliers) was okay since they had the UP&A stamp.”
Michelle Emmett, University Programming and Activities director, said that because the fliers were approved for posting by her office, she “will take full responsibility for the fliers.”
