Field hockey finale to come at tourney

For the NIU field hockey squad, time is running down.

As the season nears its end, the Huskies, 13-3-1 and ranked 20th in the latest Division I Coaches Poll, take a three-match win streak into Friday-through-Sunday’s Midwest Independent Tournament hosted by St. Louis University. Action starts each day at 9 a.m.

Joining NIU and the host Billikens, which have won the tourney three of the last five years, are Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Missouri State, Southern Illinois, Louisville and Bellarmine College.

Senior All-America goalie candidate Colleen Preston recorded two more shutouts last weekend as NIU defeated SMS 3-0 and Miami (OH) 4-0, which brings her season total to eight.

Freshman attacker Anne Marie Roozendaal should figure into the All-America balloting as she now leads the Huskies with 47 points, including 21 goals and five assists.

Freshman Laura Wehrman ranks second among Huskie scorers with 22 points (10 goals/2 assists). Regina Vanderwerf, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, has 16 points on six goals and four assists.
