Search for Church extends to Calif.
September 28, 1988
The police search for former NIU student Richard Church, who is charged with the Aug. 21 slayings of his ex-girlfriend’s parents, has extended now to Southern California.
Woodstock Police Chief Herb Pitzman said although police have located Church’s pickup truck in West Hollywood, Calif., Church has not been found.
“We have had about 100 leads which we followed, but they turned out to be nothing,” Pitzman said.
He said police have not had any confirmed sightings of Church since he was last identified by a motel clerk in the Wisconsin Dells area Aug. 21, about six hours after the slayings.
He said the FBI and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will follow up on the pickup truck lead by interviewing people in the West Hollywood area and throughout California.
“We are getting media attention (in California). Hopefully some leads can be developed out there,” Pitzman said. He said the FBI and the LA County Sheriff’s Department keep in contact with the Woodstock police “every couple of days or so.”
Pitzman said Church’s truck was located in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven convenience store in West Hollywood. The truck was towed from the store by a private towing company, which sent a letter and bill to Church’s family.
