NIU Lacrosse club clouts first 2 foes; eyes tourney

The NIU lacrosse club, off to one of its best starts since its inception, boasts an undefeated mark after two games.
The Huskies dominated their opponent last Saturday in their 15-3 home-opening victory against Marquette. NIU, which led 11-0 at halftime, controlled the entire game.
“We have a very well-balanced team this year which allowed us to control almost every aspect of the game,” said NIU goalie Danny Liske.
In the previous week NIU won its opener at Western Illinois with a 13-3 victory. NIU fell behind 3-0 in the first five minutes of the game and called a timeout to regroup. The Huskies then came out and decisively beat Western with a strong offensive surge.
“We played very good against Western,” said NIU coach Jack Chronkite. “All the players take every game as the big game and played really hard, especially when we were down 3-0.”
The Huskies, 9-5 last year, plan to improve on that record this year with their 49-man roster, the largest in the club’s history.
“I feel with our talent, combined with hard work, we could have an undefeated season,” said attackman Dave Gallahue.
NIU faces its biggest test of the young season on Saturday when it takes on the unbeaten Illini of Illinois.
“U of I always has a good team,” said attackman Jim Marvin, “but I feel confident if we stick with our game plan we can attain a victory.”
On Oct. 22-23 NIU hosts its first tournament. The Huskies expect eight teams for the tournament, including four from the Big Ten Conference.
“This is a big step for NIU lacrosse,” Chronkite said.
